Joe is an NRHA Open Futurity and Derby finalist with over $175,000 in lifetime earnings. He resides in Pilot Point, Texas, with his wife Megan. Originally born in Michigan, Joe moved to California at an early age and grew up surfing in the southern region of the state before embarking on a career in the horse industry. He spent five years working for NRHA Professional Casey Hinton during the mid-nineties, and then moved back to the West Coast to train at Bolea Farms in 2002. In 2007, Joe initiated his own operation in northern California and has earned the majority of his lifetime earnings since. In 2008 Joe returned to North Texas to work for two-time World Equestrian Games Gold Medalist, Tom McCutcheon. Joe specializes in NRHA sanctioned futurity and derby events and is known for his competitive aged event horses and innovative non-pro coaching program. With his established successes in the show pen, Joe Schmidt is one of the most sought after trainers and coaches in the reining industry. A recent highlight was Joe winning the 2014 Level 2 NRHA Open Derby Championship aboard Gun Affair.
